
Songyi Zhao, a Film and Game Composer, has been a game player and movie lover for more than 10 years. Songyi is born in Beijing, China. He is currently a Senior at Johns Hopkins University Peabody institute majoring in Music for New Media, a brand and rising new Major in Industry. Songyi studies music composition and technologies with Thomas Dolby and Christopher Kennedy. He composes for Games and Films, and some new media like Virtual Realistic; he also discovered the technique of interactive music implementation in game engines such as Unity, and its connection between audio middleware such as Wwise. Songyi has strong experience in Digital Audio Workstations such as Logic Pro X and Pro Tools. He has also experienced notation software such as Sibelius and Dorico a lot.
Songyi has been in the whole composing, recording and mixing process for films in formal studios following Ye Liu, a famous Film Composer in Beijing, China, student of Dun Tan. And in high school Songyi attend the NYU Film Scoring summer program. In these invaluable chances, he gains rich experience and knowledge of the process of film scoring industry including skill as an orchestrator, communication with the directors etc. Now, he is focusing on massive diversity of music: While still doing more cinematic soundtrack music, he also has a lot of classical work like String Quartets and some new Electronic/Rock music. As a film/game composer, He mainly makes orchestral music, cinematic music and sound-design based electronic synth music that would fit best in the picture. Songyi has a strong sense of timbre, and he believes that music should be artistical, not commercial. So he tries to make a difference from the traditional way every time. He uses his own taste of sounds and brand new ways of composing to achieve his goal. At the same time, Songyi requires himself to contain enough diversity and quality in his work to satisfy different types of media. He also makes Pop, Indie, Ethnic, Big Band, Funk, Jazz, J-pop, New Age, EDM etc.
